PNK in Action: Real Stories from the Field
How organizations are using RCN’s Pop-Up Network Kit to stay connected when it matters most
At RCN Technologies, the Pop-Up Network Kit (PNK) was built for one purpose: deliver instant, reliable connectivity anywhere. Our customers span industries — from healthcare to public safety — and their stories prove that PNK is more than just a piece of hardware. It’s a mission-critical tool.
Below, we share their firsthand experiences, organized by use case and sector, using their own words to tell the story.
Mobile Healthcare on the Move
Customer: Anonymous – IT Director, Regional Blood Center
The Challenge:
“We have a number of buses and panel trucks that we use for blood drives. These vehicles had no internet connection capability, so our donor screening software had to work in an ‘offline’ mode.”
The PNK Difference:
“These vehicles now have a live connection to our business network.”
With PNK installed, mobile staff use the same tools as their fixed-site counterparts. That means no more workarounds, no more delayed data uploads.
Real-World Impact:
“There are certain operations that our staff no longer have to perform because they are using the screening software in the same manner as our physical locations. Management staff can now see the live status of all our blood drives. Previously, they could only see the status of blood drives conducted in our physical offices.”
Advice to Peers:
“We’ve had great reliability and they are easy to operate once configured.”
Emergency Management & Rapid Field Deployment
Customer: Charles Kemker – Rush County Emergency Management/Homeland Security
The Challenge:
“We needed to be able to provide Wi-Fi service [to areas] that are poorly served or have been affected by storms or disasters. There are some parts of the county where there is little to no cellular coverage.”
After exploring options, Kemker’s team chose the RCN PNK with a Cradlepoint R1900 Ruggedized 5G Router, housed in a tough deployment case for use “in our mobile command, on the road, or at a field command post.”
The PNK Difference:
“We purchased the unit to be mobile so it can be used in our mobile command, out of a vehicle on scene or at a facility that has lost Internet.”
With both an external antenna for trailer-mounted use and internal antennas for portable deployment, the unit proved its range quickly:
“At a recent event… we were able to connect to the device from almost 200 ft away on 5G.”
Real-World Impact:
“During a lightning strike at our courthouse and on election day that took our Internet down, we were able to deploy the unit to the Clerk’s Office so they were able to continue work and finish the day. Six different computers were able to connect to the Wi-Fi from the unit without any issues and remained connected for almost a week till their Internet was restored.”
Advice to Peers:
“The unit is rugged and dependable. While we only have one cellular carrier connected, the unit does have the capability to add a second carrier.”
Hospital Disaster Recovery & Continuity of Care
Customer: Anonymous – Enterprise Architect, Major University Health System
The Challenge:
“Disaster Recovery Needs.”
Hospitals can’t afford downtime — even for minutes, let alone hours. This customer used nine PNKs during a major outage at their largest hospital.
The PNK Difference:
“It potentially saved many lives during our outage. Trauma docs and nurses were able to stay online and work quickly without stress.”
Real-World Impact:
“We were able to keep all the critical services of our hospital up and supported 2 separate rooms containing high level hospital administrators.”
Advice to Peers:
“It is an excellent disaster recovery tool and should be a staple in all areas of business and governance.”
The Common Thread: Reliability When It Counts
Across these stories — from blood drives to emergency operations centers to critical hospital care — three themes keep coming up:
1. Rapid Deployment:
“We were able to deploy the unit… and finish the day.”
“Nine PNKs… kept all the critical services of our hospital up.”
2. Dependability Under Pressure:
“We’ve had great reliability.”
“The unit is rugged and dependable.”
3. Real Operational Impact:
“Management staff can now see the live status of all our blood drives.”
“Trauma docs and nurses… work quickly without stress.”
If you need portable, high-performance connectivity that’s already battle-tested in the field, RCN’s PNK is ready to go to work for you.
