When one regional healthcare provider was struggling to find a reliable solution to connect their nurses during in-home visits, they didn’t know where to turn. Needing a reliable connection for tablets, laptops, and other internet-reliant devices, the customer turned to the RCN team for help.
Challenge
When making in-home visits, the Healthcare Provider’s team of nurses routinely use tablets, laptops, and other medical devices to record and upload patient health information.
When looking for a connectivity solution, they required a network that would be dependable, resilient, and secure.
Solution
After learning about the PNK and its ability to use cellular to connect devices wirelessly, the Healthcare Provider decided to purchase twenty-one units for their team of traveling nurses.
Each PNK is equipped with a Cradlepoint IBR900 endpoint, an LED battery life indicator, and an accessory pouch that houses both a standard wall charger and a vehicle charger.
Supporting Connectivity In the Field
For the Healthcare Provider’s team of nurses, having a PNK meant they now had access to the connectivity required to support their patients.
Many of the medical devices used by the team on a daily basis required some form of internet connectivity, and consumer-grade hotspots just couldn’t keep up. Additionally, other products on the market required either a constant power connection or additional setup by the end user after purchasing – neither of which was good enough for this Healthcare Provider.
Twenty-one PNKs, all equipped with Cradlepoint IBR900s, provided a throughput of up to 940 Mbps in areas that had varying levels of cellular coverage, and could be powered on by a single button press. This greatly simplified the deployment process for nurses in the field who don’t have time to configure their personal wireless network.
Simplicity & Ease of Use
Ease of use was paramount for this Healthcare Provider, as less time spent troubleshooting hardware equates to more time caring for patients.
Part of finding a solution for any customer includes a discussion about special requirements for provisioning or device setup, which is where RCN is able to configure each PNK to meet the specific needs of any customer.
For this customer, RCN was able to configure the network SSID and password before shipping the solution, so that upon arrival nurses would already know the password and which network they should connect to.
Durable & Long Lasting Hardware
With a rather tight budget, this Healthcare Provider needed to know that its’ solution would last well into the foreseeable future.
Not only would the hardware itself need to be durable, but the required recurring subscriptions like NetCloud Manager would need to be taken into consideration as well.
By working with RCN, the Healthcare Provider was able to deploy one of Cradlepoint’s most popular routers and have their one, three, or five-year NetCloud plan set up for them. When the NetCloud subscription is up for renewal, the Healthcare Provider will have the opportunity to refresh their devices or continue with the IBR900s.
A Look Inside the Solution
Ruggedized Case
The PNKs ruggedized casing is IP64 rated and helps ensure durability by absorbing the daily wear and tear that would take normal devices offline.
The case is also weatherproof, which allows it to be used even during light to moderate rains.
Cradlepoint IBR900
In order to combat budget restrictions, RCN outfitted the customer’s PNKs with Cradlepoint IBR900 endpoints.
These devices are LTE-only, which helps to provide some monetary relief while still delivering an ultra-reliable signal with enough bandwidth to support multiple devices.
AG90 Antenna
The AG90 Series is one of RCN’s preferred antennas to use with the PNK. Available in 7-in-1 and 5-in-1 options, this antenna covers 5G and 4G signals. Each antenna sits inside the case and can still provide a reliable signal – even with the lid closed.
