Why now

POTS lines are being retired on a schedule

Carriers are shutting down the copper network that analog phone lines run on. When your building's wire center is retired, every line on it needs a replacement, including the ones your fire alarm and elevators depend on.

2029

The year AT&T says it expects to have most of its copper network retired.1

500

Wire centers where the FCC has approved AT&T to fully discontinue copper service, about 10% of its footprint.1

1,900+

Wire centers RCN tracks for carrier retirement filings in its public POTS Shutdown Tracker, so we can tell you where your sites stand.2

Got a discontinuance notice? The date on it is your deadline. Installs average 30 days from signed order, so starting now leaves room to spare.

What POTS Link replaces

The quiet lines behind your building systems

Fire alarm communicators

Panels that report to your monitoring center over a supervised line.

Elevator emergency phones

The phone in every cab that has to reach help when someone is stuck.

Emergency call boxes

Blue-light towers, parking and campus phones, and area of refuge systems.

Security and intrusion alarms

Alarm dialers that call out to your monitoring provider.

Fax lines

Still required in healthcare, legal, government and records offices.

Gates, access control and point of sale

Door entry, gate openers and terminals that still dial out on analog.

How the POTS consultation works

From your line list to live service in four steps

1

Inventory

We help you list every analog line by site and what it serves. It is common to find lines nobody knew were still active.

2

Site check

We confirm cellular coverage where each device will go and note anything that needs an antenna.

3

Fixed quote

You get one clear price for hardware, installation, service and support, plus how you can buy it.

4

Install and support

Our own install team cuts you over, and the RCN NOC supports every line around the clock.

Questions we hear most

Before you decide

Is a cellular line code-compliant for fire alarms and elevators?

POTS Link is compliant with NFPA 72, ASME A17, UL 864 and E911 requirements. Your local authority having jurisdiction makes the final call, and we provide the documentation they typically ask for.

What if cell signal is weak in our building?

We check coverage during the consultation. POTS Link uses two carriers with automatic failover, and where a site needs it, we include an antenna in the plan.

What happens during a power outage?

Each device carries 24 or more hours of battery backup, so life-safety lines keep working when building power is out.

Does it work with our existing fire panel and elevator phones?

Yes. POTS Link connects to your equipment through standard analog ports and supports SIA and Contact ID signaling, so panels and phones work without reconfiguration.

Who supports the lines after install?

The RCN Network Operations Center supports every POTS Link line 24/7/365 and often spots an issue before you do.

How long does it take?

Installs average 30 days from signed order to live lines. Larger multi-site rollouts are scheduled site by site so nothing goes dark.

Can we buy through our contract vehicle?

POTS Link is available on GSA Schedule and through Sourcewell, OMNIA Partners, Equalis Group, Texas DIR, and Georgia and Pennsylvania state contracts, as well as through Carahsoft.

What does the POTS consultation include?

A line inventory by site, a coverage check, and a fixed quote covering hardware, installation, service and support. There is no obligation.
