Innovative East Tennessee Technology Business, RCN Technologies, is listed as one of the ‘Most Successful Companies in America’ on the 2020 Inc. 5000 list.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – RCN Technologies, a technology-based managed services and LTE 5G connectivity company founded and headquartered in Knoxville, Tenn., earned its first ranking in the 2020 edition of the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America.
RCN makes its debut on the elite list of successful businesses ranked #1,895 of the 5,000 companies with the most three-year revenue growth in the entire country. Notable technology companies who have earned rankings on the Inc. 5000 in the past include Microsoft, Zappos, Oracle, Intuit, and Vizio.
With seven consecutive years of year-over-year growth in an industry with declining revenues, RCN has demonstrated it can overcome trends and market challenges to its business model. In addition, the company’s success has been produced organically—one customer at a time—with no mergers or acquisitions to inflate annual revenues.
Though RCN Technologies has been eligible for the Inc. 5000 since 2017, this is the first year the company has applied for ranking on the list. Based on available information, RCN would have earned a ranking on the Inc. 5000 list—as high as #418—every year it has been eligible.
Co-Founder and President, Geoff Yearack, says RCN’s growth success is due to the diligence and hard work of its team members, the determination of he and CEO Jennifer Yearack (his wife), and the quality of the company’s products and services.
“I’ve owned a few very successful companies during my entrepreneurial journey, but I’ve never owned a company that was this life-changing for our employees and that we can look at and be so proud of.”
The Knoxville-based I.T. company has sold to customers in all 50 states and is working to expand its reach internationally this year. RCN also has a nationwide employee footprint with regional remote offices in six cities across five states on both sides of the continent.
RCN has begun using its early growth success to invest in research and development of new products that can help make technology easier and more affordable to use for businesses and organizations. Newly released products include a Pop-up Network Kit, a Rolling Wi-Fi Kit, an Out-of-Band Management Kit, Work-from-Anywhere Kit, and more. In the coming months, the company is looking to expand its workforce and regional offices in the Southeast and Northeast U.S.
RCN Technologies’ owners, Jennifer and Geoff Yearack, are Inc. 5000 entrepreneurs for the first time.
The husband and wife co-founders mention that they love being able to come into work every day to a company that focuses on investing in and developing a talented and dependable team that provides affordable, best-in-class service.
“It’s always been about the the way we treat our employees and the way we treat our customers. It’s never been about the profit. We invest in and bring value to our employees, and they pour that directly into our customers. It’s our ‘Expect More’ mentality.”
The ‘Expect More’ Promise
The phrase ‘Expect More’ is an idea that has become part of the fabric that makes RCN special. This company maxim captures a promise that every person and business—employees, customers, vendors, and partners—that has a connection to RCN can expect exceptional service from anyone throughout the company.
When employees go above and beyond for those we work with, they are celebrated and rewarded. This ‘Expect More’ concept creates incredible relationships both internally and externally.
Investing in People
Yearack also mentioned his passion for investing in the people at RCN is his “mission field.” He referenced how some philanthropists and ministries will donate to causes or travel to serve on a mission abroad, but he pours out his faith and ministry to positively impact the team that works with him every day.
As an example, RCN provides generous benefits for a company of its size—rivaling workplace benefits like Amazon and Zappos (an inspiration for Yearack). These culture-building cornerstones include flexible workweeks for employees, unlimited PTO, over 50% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance, 30 days paid parental leave, catered lunches, and personally cooking meals for many of the in-house and off-site events.
Yearack said that one of the keys to the RCN’s growth to date has been the people that have dedicated themselves to achieving success together. He says it has been rewarding to see their personal and professional growth parallel the company’s overall growth, too.
